National 5

In S4- S6, pupils can elect to take Drama and study towards a National Qualification. As some pupils will be returning to the subject after studying other subjects, this will mean that there is a mix of S4, S5 and S6 pupils in one class.

The National Qualifications have recently changed and pupils will spend the first part of the year covering the generic Drama and Production Skills work to enable them to enhance their skills in preparation for the exam based section of the qualification.

NATIONAL DRAMA ASSESSMENT

Practical Exam  - 60 marks (60%)

During the practical exam pupils are expected to take on either a technical role (Lighting, Sound, Props, Set Design, Costume or Hair and Make-up) or an Acting role. An external examiner will come into school on a pre-arranged date and pupils are expected to complete one of the following:

TECHNICAL ROLE

Candidates will be expected to go through all pre-show checks and demonstrated their ability to carry out the associated tasks. They will have completed folio work which will be available for the examiner to look at and from this and during the performance, they will be awarded the marks in line with the National Standard.

OR

ACTING ROLE

Each acting candidate is required to act out a role that is no less than 10 minutes in length. The total length of any group presentation should be no more than 45 minutes in total. The candidates are marked against a set of criteria in line with the National Standard.

Preparation for Performance

All candidates must complete a 'Preparation for Performance'. This is worth 10 marks of the total 60. This allows the candidate to inform the examiner of the work they have done in preparation for the final acting piece.

Written Exam - 60 marks  (40%)

The new written exam consists of 60 marks across two sections. Section A requires them to write about a performance that they have participated in within the course. Section B requires candidates to respond to questions based on one of three stimuli given in the paper. Candidates are expected to show their understanding  through the use of correct terminology. They will be given a copy of the SQA's Drama Lexicon and the department study guide which will have all the information needed to help them through the written exam.
